Dog Breeding

Dog breeding is probably one of the most profitable business if done right. Most text books say a bunch of stuff about dog breeding and whelping but its totally different when your own dog is actually giving birth to live puppies. Lack of experience could risk the life of your dog. Breeding for the sake of wanting new puppies is another story. There are many factors to consider before breeding a dog. The dog owner should be well prepared because there is no money in dog breeding you fail to do the necessary procedures.

Anyone can breed and anyone can sell puppies. It’s non-taxable except for the papers and pedigree registration. It also depends on the breed of the dog you are trying breed. There are some breed of dogs that are high maintenance and require a lot of time and effort. For example, shih tzu, chow-chow, maltese, pomerian and other long-coated dogs. These dogs require a lot of time for grooming and maintaining the coat. Why do you have to take care of the coat? Simply because you can’t sell puppies or dogs like this if their coats are matted and dirty. You need to be able to present a clean-looking puppy to make it more adorable and irresistible for the buyers.

Most dog breeders who sell puppies for business always start by getting pet quality dogs. Due to lack of knowledge, they breed without understanding the Breed Standard. It  often result to puppies with health problems or poor quality. So instead of earning money from breeding, puppies die in an early age or sold for a very cheap cost because of its undesirable appearance. Money is lost, time is wasted, investment is gone.

On the other hand, other breeders who produce top-notch quality puppies/dogs get good money in return.  These are show dog breeders. They are well aware of the Breed Standard. They care enough about their puppies and they do not breed dogs to make a living. Show homes consider this as a hobby not a business, but of course, the fact remains that they earn big amount of money from selling show quality pups/dogs. Good quality specimens are generally expensive because it has been bred carefully. Show dog breeders carefully analyze the lineage of the dam and sire to check if there are no known health problems, faults or deformities that can be passed on the next generation before they get into the breeding program. Getting the perfect match (sire and dam) in order to produce a potential quality litter is not an easy task. It usually takes several years before they produce a perfectly-bred litter.
